                                  “Change and Continuity in ASEAN’S Perception of Japan since the 1990s”

 

Overview

 

The JSA-ASEAN Conference is part of an international event for scholars in ASEAN and Japan working on Japanese Studies. The previous two conferences were held in Singapore in 2006 and Hanoi, Vietnam in 2009, respectively.

This year, the Malaysian Association of Japanese Studies (MAJAS) in collaboration with the Japan Studies Program, University of Malaya, has the honour of organizing the 3rd JSA-ASEAN international conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 22 to 23 February, 2012. The main sponsor for this conference is The Japan Foundation.

The theme of the conference is “Change and Continuity in ASEAN’S Perception of Japan since the 1990s”.

 

 Objectives 

  • To provide a platform for discussions on Japanese Studies, particularly on topics pertaining to Japan-ASEAN relations from a Southeast Asian perspective.
  • To promote networking among scholars working on Japanese Studies in Southeast Asia.
  • To strengthen collaboration among the Japanese Studies associations in ASEAN.

 

 Call for Panels and Papers

 

We invite individual paper and group panel proposals to be presented in the concurrent sessions of the conference of JSA-ASEAN. Papers/panels are welcome in the following streams:

A.   Politics/International Relations/ Sociology/ Anthropology/ History

B.   Business/ Economics/ Law

C.   Literature/ Arts/Linguistics/Language

 

Proposal of Panels

The deadline for proposals of panels is 30 September 2011. All panel proposals must include the following:
  • Name of panel chair
  • Position
  • Affiliation
  • Title of panel
  • Brief description of panel (no more than 350 words in English, or 400 characters in Japanese)
  • Proposed presenters, their details and paper abstracts (see submission of abstracts and individual papers below)
  • Preferred stream (A/B/C)
  • Audio-visual requirements (if any)
  • Contact details (mailing address, tel., fax and e-mail address)
Each panel will be 90 minutes in length, and should consist of 3 and at most 4 presentations to allow time for discussion. Notification of acceptance of panels: 31 October 2011.

 

Submission of Abstracts and Individual Papers

The deadline for submission of paper abstracts is 30 September 2011.All submissions must include the following:
  • Name
  • Position
  • Affiliation
  • Title of paper
  • Abstract – either in Japanese (not more than 300 characters) or English (not more than 250 words)
  • Preferred stream  (A/B/C)
  • Audio-visual requirements (if any)

Notification of acceptance of papers:  31 October 2011.

 

The JSA-ASEAN Logo Competition

The competition is open to all Southeast Asian nationals and all entries must be submitted through the JSA-ASEAN Steering Committees.The respective Steering Committees submit the top three entries to the grand finals competition.  All entries must reach the Secretariat by 31 December 2011.The design must incorporate the following elements:

  • JSA-ASEAN
  • Must be in color but not more than four colors.
The rationale and symbolism of the logo (design, color, etc.) must be explained and fully detailed.A judging panel will be formed to determine the winning entry.The winner of the competition will be announced by 1 February 2011 and he/she will receive a round-trip economy airfare and local hospitality to attend the 3rd JSA-ASEAN conference in Kuala Lumpur.  All designs submitted to the competition are deemed the property of the JSA-ASEAN and the Association has full proprietor rights.  The Association also has the right to amend the original design as it sees fit.The winning logo will be unveiled at the 3rd JSA-ASEAN conference.
